After Capturing Ohio Auctioneer Championship, Bridgeport's Wayne Yoder Advances to International Competition

Wayne Yoder of Bridgeport's Kaufman Realty & Auctions has been named champion in the Ohio Auctioneers' Competition and will advance to international competition this July in New Orleans.

About 40 contestants took part in the Ohio championships, which took place Jan. 4. A native of Sugar Creek, Ohio - where real estate auctions were quite popular - Yoder said he didn't really grow up aspiring to be an auctioneer. He did, however always aspire to to his best and make a difference in the world.

He likes the fact that auctions are an effective, fast and transparent way to sell assets. The appeal of a real estate auction, he said, is the turnaround time.

“What people like is that they can set a date and they know they are going to get an offer on the property,” he said. “It’s a fast, transparent way of liquidating or selling property. It creates action.”

A first-generation auctioneer, Yoder is a 2011 graduate of Walton School of Auctioneering and captured championships in the Ohio and West Virginia 2015 Rookie Bid Calling Competitions. He is a licensed real estate agent in West Virginia and a licensed auctioneer in West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

He and Andrew Yoder, a distant relative, have operated Kaufman Realty & Auctions in Bridgeport since 2015. They both previously worked for the company in Sugar Creek, where it began more than three decades ago.

“What I like about the business is that every day is different,” Wayne Yoder said. “I’m an outgoing guy and I get to knock on doors and the neat thing about it is that we make a difference. We come upon someone who is looking to move with three kids and they don’t know what to do with everything. We can come in and make it all go away in one day. We make it happen, allowing people to get from point A to point B.”

The West Virginia Auctioneer Association will meet Feb. 15-16 at Stonewall Resort and host an auctioneer competition Saturday evening open to all auctioneers with a West Virginia license. The public is invited to be part of the audience.
