Americana Theme Sweeps Bridgeport's Main Street

Bridgeport’s Americana spirit is in full swing – to the tune of about 50 brand new light post banners bearing red, white and blue stars and stripes.

“We have banners for every season and they eventually get weathered,” said Parks and Recreation Director Joe Shuttleworth. “At least every two years, we replace one of the seasons and this year, we replaced our summertime banners.”

About $3,500 was budgeted for the purchase, said Finance Director Monica Musgrave. Shuttleworth and his staff chose the design.

“We’ve done so much work decorating for the 4th of July at the (Benedum) Civic Center and we have the Veterans Memorial and all the other Americana theming,” Shuttleworth said. “So, we went with the patriotic style banners, incorporating the Bridgeport logo along with the bright American colors. I think they look fantastic.”

To compliment the patriotic banners which line the Main Street corridor, the city has opted to fill hanging flower pots with red, white and blue flowers this year.

“They are petunias and actually the blue might look purple, but they look really nice,” Shuttleworth said. “They will get prettier throughout the summer as they grow and branch out a little bit.”

There are about 90 lamp posts along Main Street. Half are equipped with hanging flower pots and half with banners. There are also flowers in the area of Benedum Civic Center, Bridgeport City Pool and Bridgeport Municipal Building, as well as the Loyd Lang Bridge and Virginia Avenue bridge. The flowers are purchased annually from Freeds Greenhouse.

The red, white and blue Bridgeport backdrop was created Wednesday as city staff members hung  banners and flowers.
