Annexation, Rezoning of Trailhead Estates Property, Life-Saving Award Among Agenda Items of Monday City Council Meeting

There’s a lot happening in Bridgeport, said Mayor Andy Lang. Businesses are popping up along the Main Street corridor and in the Whtie Oaks and Charles Pointe developments. The potential addition of Trailhead Estates will help accommodate our growing city.

All the ducks won’t be in a row until Council approves annexation of the property – 45 acres-plus - and that is scheduled to be addressed at Monday’s City Council meeting.

“As long as the property owner agrees to it, annexation by petition is a relatively simple process,” said Community Development Director Randy Spellman. “It comes to Council Monday night for certification.”

Consideration of a report and recommendations from Bridgeport Planning Commission and the first reading of an ordinance amending the rezoning the property from business to residential is also slated for Monday’s meeting.

The property, Lang said, is accessible from Corpening Drive off U.S. Route 50, just below McDonald’s, behind CityNet on Platinum Drive or from Route 58 between Rosewood Estates and Platinum Drive. Developer Beau Henderson purchased the acres from Nancy Chandler to establish the housing development, which Lang said will be quite an asset to the city.

“There’s no doubt about it. There’s a lack of single-family homesites,” he said. “Except for here and there, there’s nowhere to build a house in Bridgeport.”

Monday’s meeting will also feature a pair of resolutions, authorizing Lang to enter into agreements with the Division of Justice & Community Services to receive and administer Justice Assistant Grant monies awarded to the city. The grants are awarded each year, one to fund Bridgeport’s Police Resource Officer position and the other utilized by the Drug Task Force.

A handful of awards and presentations will precede the business session.

First, a certificate of recognition will be presented for the city’s participation in Small Business Saturday which takes place Nov. 25 and is sponsored nationally by American Express. This marks the fourth year the city has participated. Business representatives who contact City Clerk Andrea Kerr at Bridgeport City Hall by Nov. 17 will be included in promotional materials, which will include store discounts.

Lang will present a pair of proclamations, one declaring November as Pancreatic Cancer Month and the other, declaring Nov. 13 as Bridgeport High School DECA Day.

Last, but certainly not least, will be a life-saving award presented to Bridgeport Police Department Officers Troy Rutherford, Dave Janssen, Mike Hammond, Department of Natural Resources Officer Ben Riley and Harrison County Process Server Maria Watson-Bourgeois. It was July 18 when law enforcement officers pulled an 18-year-old male to safety on the Zeke Trupo Bridge on Lodgeville Road.

City Council convenes 7 p.m. at City Hall and will meet prior to that in a 6:15 p.m. work session.
