Anti-Bullying Unity Day Held at Johnson Elementary; Students Get Bracelets

"Orange" you glad you can support the National Bullying Prevention Week, which culminated on Wednesday with Unity Day?  The color orange represents the “Unite Against Bullying” campaign and it is a visual reminder of school and community support when it comes to bullying.

Tragic stories of the results of bullying have been all over the news in the past few years, with the majority of the bullying being done online.  Once considered only child’s play, the problem is now a national epidemic and Unity Day at Johnson Elementary helped students of all ages find ways to report bullying and stop it in its tracks.

The Bridgeport Junior Women’s Club, Johnson Elementary PTA and Simpson Elementary PTA sponsored the purchase of orange bracelets that were passed out to students on Wednesday.  The Johnson Elementary PTA has been strong supporters of Anti-Bullying events for years and now has a committee dedicated to the cause.

“Our committee is dedicated to reminding students to be aware of bullying, be kind to others and be a friend to everyone,” said Rose Rosanna, PTA President.

Last year, an anti-bullying themed t-shirt contest was held and students proudly displayed the winning design at the end of the year field day.

“By continuing to get the message out to the students, we give simple reminders of a very serious issue,” said Rosanna.  “Events such as Unity Day make a big impact on the students as they become young adults and encounter these issues.”
