Assessing the Damage: Fire Department Reports Storm-Related Incidents

By Julie Perine on July 08, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

As of 6 p.m., weather conditions were calm. Some residents were picking up tree limbs and otherwise assessing damage left by a storm which whipped through the area late this afternoon.

Bridgeport Fire Captain Scott Wilburn said his department had several calls over the course of an hour or so. Many of those calls came in as fallen trees, but were really large tree limbs.

"We picked them up, threw them to the side of the road and went on," he said.

There were a few significant calls, however, Wilburn said.

“One was some power lines which came down on East Main Street and started a small brush fire, but that didn’t amount to much,” he said.

That incident occurred at Joseph Michael Beauty Salon. The power lines ignited trees/shrubbery in the yard, which was quickly extinguished.

“The other incident was on Water Street. A big tree came down and took down power lines and two power poles,” he said.

That happened just beside the Hot Rod Shop on Virginia Avenue. From that intersection, Water Street is closed to through traffic until the area is cleaned up.

Bridgeport Fire Department also responded to a call for a power line fire on Garrett Street (in vicinity of "Airport Road"), but that matter had to be handled by the power company, Wilburn said.

There was also a tree down on Worthington Drive.

No one was hurt in any of the incidents.

Meadowbrook Mall Property Manager Marcello Lalama said about a third of the mall’s stores were left without power and are – at least temporarily – closed.

“Basically, it's the side of the mall from (the Gap) to Marshalls, which includes Sears, Elder Beerman Home Store and the food court,” he said.

All other mall stores are open for business, Lalama said.

According to FirstEnergy’s Web site, there are multiple power outages in North Central West Virginia, but not significant numbers. Some cities report up to dozens of outages.

As was reported earlier on Connect-Bridgeport, there was a massive tree which came down at Bridgeport Cemetery (pictured below) and about 60 feet of fencing was wiped out at Bridgeport Recreation Complex.

The immediate area had been under a severe weather watch through 8 p.m., but WBOY Chief Meteorologist Jason Parish said that watch has been lifted. There may see some isolated incidents throughout the evening, but nothing in comparison to what was seen earlier today, he said.
