Attorney General Morrisey Releases Most Common Consumer Complaints

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on March 05, 2015 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Attorney General Patrick Morrisey today said north-central West Virginia residents filed more complaints about credit cards and collection agencies in 2014 than any other topic area.

The announcement comes as part of the Office of the Attorney General’s efforts to track the types of complaints that were most prevalent in different regions of the state last year. The Office looked at written complaints received from residents in 11 counties that make up the region — Barbour, Doddridge, Harrison, Lewis, Marion, Monongalia, Preston, Randolph, Taylor, Tucker and Upshur counties. The tally does not include phone calls from consumers who did not follow up with a written complaint.

“We think it is important for people to see what the local issues and complaint areas are so that if they encounter a problem or scam, they know they aren’t alone,” Morrisey said. “Many people in the region have called the Charleston office, the Martinsburg Office, or met with our local consumer education and compliance specialist to get information, ask questions or vocalize a concern about something. Our staff is willing to help in any way they can so that people feel empowered.”

The top 10 complaint areas in the region were:
  1. Credit and Collection Agencies
  2. Vehicle Purchases, Repairs (New and Used)
  3. Solicitations
  4. Telemarketers and Robocalls
  5. Contests, Sweepstakes, and Prize scams
  6. General Sales
  7. Landlord-Tennant Issues
  8. Internet Service
  9.  Banks, Financial Institutions, and Mortgages
  10. Cable and Satellite Equipment and Service
