Ava Fazalare, Tanner Hathaway Named Students of Month for December 2023 at Bridgeport High School

Bridgeport High School Principal Renee' Mathews has announced that Ava Fazalare and Tanner Hathaway are the December, 2023 Students of the Month. Below is a profile of each student.
 
Ava Fazalare, daughter of Dr. Joseph and Krysta Fazalare, has consistently achieved honor roll throughout her four years at Bridgeport High School, earning academic letters and lamps annually in recognition of her hard work and dedication to her studies. During her junior year, she was inducted into the National Honor Society and has enrolled in several Advanced Placement courses, such as AP Statistics, AP Language and Composition, AP Literature and Composition, and AP Chemistry. An active participant in her school's community, Ava has served on student council for four years, and as a senior, she holds the position of student body treasurer.

In addition to her academic achievements, Ava has been active in various organizations at BHS, including Girl Up and the International Thespian Honor Society, and has taken part in numerous theatrical productions. She also plays the violin with the BHS orchestra. Ava has been deeply involved in community service projects, such as the Sleep in Heavenly Peace project, Angel Tree, and leading several nursing home projects.

After graduating, Ava plans to pursue a major in Animal and Poultry Sciences at Virginia Tech University, with the aspiration of becoming a veterinarian.
 
She is deeply grateful to all her teachers and mentors at BHS for their support and guidance.
 
Tanner Hathaway is the son of Danny and Amber Hathaway and has one brother Anthony “AC” Caldera.
 
Tanner has been active in many of Bridgeport High School’s academic, athletic and volunteer opportunities during his 4 years. 
 
Academically, Tanner has remained on the Honor Roll all 4 years of High School and has taken AP Language, Literature, Government, Psychology, and US History. He has received his Academic Letter/ Lamp each year. 
 
He is a member of the Key Club, which has supported multiple events throughout the local area. Along with others from the football and track team, Tanner has participated in fundraising and volunteer opportunities including the Medbrooke Children’s Charity golf tournament, team car washes and assisted with track event setups and score keeping. He is currently volunteering at Shepherd’s Corner two days a week. He is a graduate of Boy’s State where he served as Director of Emergency Services and was a nominee for the PE Kercheval Award for outstanding leadership and high morals. He has also maintained part time employment as a Lifeguard at the Bridgeport Country Club, VA pool and worked at Target and JD Sports. 
 
Tanner has participated in athletics all 4 years and was a Varsity starter on the football team. Tanner was a defensive captain and was also a starter on offense. He has been named to 1st Team All-Conference (LB) and All County. He was also awarded Honorable Mention All State. Tanner holds an offer from Concord University for football but is undecided. During his time on the track team Tanner has also excelled. He and his teammates hold the school record for the 4x100 meter relay and won the AAA State Championship in the same event. 
 
Tanner is currently undecided on where he will attend college next fall. He has received a service academy nomination from Senator Capito and has applied to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. where he hopes to serve his country as a pilot.
 
He has also been accepted to WVU, Shepherd, and Concord where he will plan on majoring in biology.
