BHS Science Bowl Team Prepares for State Competition

On any given day, the BHS Cafeteria is missing five notable students.  That is because they have chosen to fully commit to practicing for the Science Bowl for one hour every day in lieu of spending lunch with their peers.  This commitment has paid off, as the team will be heading to the State Science Bowl Meet on February 6-7 at the Mountainlair in Morgantown.

In what will be the final Science Bowl State Competition for Coach Barbara Judy,  the team has proven to be ready.  After placing second among all the teams in the RESA 7 region, they have been given the opportunity to advance to states, competing against 24 teams from West Virginia.

The competition, sponsored by the National Department of Energy, will take place over two days, with single and double elimination determining the winners.

“We have won states twice before,” said Judy, who has been coaching since 1995.  “I feel confident about the team and they have been diligent about practicing.”

Team members include Captain Troy Pallay, Minahal Naveed, Alex Popovich, Noah Romay and Jack Funk, who were selected as the highest scoring individuals during practice teams in the fall.  Winners at the state meet will advance to the National competition in Washington, D.C. in April, where they will compete against teams from all 50 states.

“I have mixed feelings about the meet,” said Judy.  “On the one hand, I am excited to take the team to states and feel so proud of what they have and could accomplish.  On the other hand, I am sad about this being my last state competition, as these teams have been a part of my life for so long and I have really enjoyed working with them.”
