BHS Soccer, Golf and Volleyball Teams Ready to Hit the Ground Running

By Julie Perine on August 02, 2015 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

UPDATES: According to Bridgeport High School Assistant Girls Soccer Coach Melissa Miller, Wednesday's practice is now 6:30-9 a.m. just like every other day this week. It was initially reported that Wednesday's practice would be 7-9 p.m. That plan has changed, Miller said.

According to Golf Coach Fred Wilhelm, Monday's initial practice went well, with six new prospective members coming out for the season. Tryouts will start Tuesday, 8 a.m. at Bridgeport Country Club.

It’s time fall sports and Bridgeport High School soccer and volleyball teams are ready to hit the ground running.

The boys’ soccer team takes its home field Monday afternoon for its very first practice of the season. Coach Danny Hamrick said players should arrive by or before 4 p.m., with all gear - including shoes and shin guards – and an up-to-date physical form. Monday, the team will practice through 6 p.m.

Tuesday through Friday, the Indians will practice 8-10 p.m. During those initial practices, Hamrick hopes to start considering his formations for the season.

“I’m hoping the guys are in good shape and in that case, I’ll start positioning,” he said. “If not, we’ll have to spend some time conditioning.”

Hamrick said he expects between 32 and 40 players to go out. He based that estimate on numbers he had in the spring and for last fall's season. He also foresees that it should be a good season.

“We lost about five seniors, but only two were starters and got a lot of minutes on the field,” he said. “We made it to regional finals last year and we have a lot of good kids coming back.”

The Indians start their season Friday, Aug. 21 with an 8 p.m. contest against South Harrison. Assisting Hamrick this season are Joe Rogers and J.D. Lister.

Girls’ soccer got a jumpstart on the season, starting mandatory practices Monday, Aug. 3. This week, the team will practice 6:30 to 9 a.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. On Wed., Aug. 5, practice will be 7-9 p.m.

Assistant Coach Melissa Miller said practices start promptly at designated times and she suggests early arrival if athletes need prep time. The Lady Indians need to bring a soccer ball, running shoes and cleats to every practice. Miller stresses the importance of hydration during these late-summer days and asks that the players also bring a water bottle.

The Lady Indians also begin their season Aug. 21. In order to play in that game, players must have completed at least 14 practices, Miller said.

Those wanting to be part of the BHS Golf Team will meet 8 a.m. Monday at Bridgeport Country Club for an 8 a.m. practice. Thereafter, Coach Fred Wilhelm will hold tryouts Tuesday and Wednesday, with yet undetermined times.

“Bridgeport Country Club controls that so we are going day to day,” he said.

Wilhelm said he has six players returning from his 2014 state runner-up year.

“I’m hoping to at least get six new players for a total of 12,” he said.

Bridgeport High School volleyball starts Monday, Aug. 10 with practice running from 5:30-8 p.m. at the BHS gym.

“Anyone interested in trying out for the team should come with knee pads and shoes and be ready to practice,” said Coach Ally Curry.

Practices will continue throughout the week, taking place 5:30-8 p.m. every night except Wed., Aug. 12 during which day practice will be held 3:30-5:30 p.m.

Once school resumes, the team will practice after school, Curry said.
She said she’s looking for somewhere between 17 and 20 girls to go out for the season.

“There could be some girls I haven’t seen through the summer so there could be even more than that,” she said. “We only lost two girls from last season and the incoming freshman class is decent size.”

Curry said the Lady Indians had a pretty good season in 2014.

“We lost out in sectionals and didn’t make it to regionals, but with having most of the team back, I’m pretty excited for this season,” she said. “It should be a good year.”
