BHS Sophomore's Talents Recognized by State

By Trina Runner on March 29, 2015 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Some might call him a Renaissance man.  After all, it describes someone with many talents or areas of knowledge.  It seems a fitting title for Sophomore Dough Soule, who recently was chosen to attend the Governors School of the Arts in July.

Although chosen for his incredible creative writing skills, Soule also has made his mark on the stage, both for playing his banjo and for acting.  He has been playing banjo since elementary school and continues weekly lessons to continue improving his skills.  His playing was recently showcased in the one-act play, “Sing Down the Moon,” which won BHS Thespian Troupe first place in regional competition and will travel to states in April.

Soule played the part of a pirate in “Peter Pan” in last weekend’s BHS performance and is an active member of the Key Club, most recently being nominated to the position of Bulletin Editor.  In addition to being an honor roll student and working part-time, Soule also is dedicated to community service, volunteering his time in local nursing homes and to causes involving animals and the environment.

His initiative and leadership qualities earned him the honor of being chosen as the Bridgeport High School HOBY Ambassador for 2015.  HOBY is a program that motivates students to make a difference in their communities.  For five decades, the program has inspired students to act locally and globally to make an impact through volunteering and leadership opportunities.  As the ambassador, Soule will go through the training later this year and bring his initiatives back to Bridgeport to put them into action.

Of all his talents and knowledge, the BHS Sophomore is most focused on his writing, the very talent that earned him a spot at the Governor’s School of the Arts.  “I write nearly 3000 words a day, working on a novel and simply for a creative outlet.  I truly believe my writing ability will allow me to be a beneficial to society and hope to inspire others.”  Only 12 students in the state were chosen to attend the Governors School of the Arts for writing.  They will join students in other categories of the arts in July for a weeklong program of intense development for their talents.  Among those who will be acknowledged for outstanding talent will be Soule, the Renaissance man from BHS.
