As part of its annual “12 Days of Christmas” event, Bridgeport High School Student Council has presented a check in the amount of $269 to United Way of Harrison County. The money is most appreciated and will be used toward the current fundraising campaign, which targets a goal of $840,111.

“The fact that they chose us as one of their charities; that’s cool,” said Executive Director Marie Battles.

During the 12 Days of Christmas, the BHS Student Council raised awareness of charitable organizations and encouraged BHS students to donate time, resources and/oror items to the various causes.

“They usually do two days per charity,” said Rene Mathews, who, along with Cheryl McCarthy, serves as BHS Student Council advisor.

Some collection efforts involved cash to benefit organizations such as the Heifer International Program. Others involved food and clothing items to benefit the Clarksburg Mission and local food pantries.

The group raised money for United Way by collecting spare change over the course of two days.

“The kids look at different organizations they want to help, such as HOPE, Inc., CASA and several different ones,” Mathews said. “It seemed to make more sense to donate to United Way so they could split the money up however they deemed necessary.”

Mathews and McCarthy oversaw the students’ fundraising efforts; splitting up the projects. McCarthy spearheaded the United Way fundraiser.

“We thank these young leaders for their generosity and look forward to what we can accomplish together in 2015,” Battles said.
