Blaze Destroys Broadway Avenue Home, All Family Members Escape

At 2:58 a.m., Bridgeport Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Broadway Avenue and discovered a working fire which firefighters battled for about two and a half hours.

Bridgeport Fire Captain Scott Wilburn said the blaze started in the second story of the family home. The roof collapsed and the entire second floor burned. The home was declared a total loss. All family members escaped the fire, but the family pet, a dog, was lost in the fire.

Coordinator of Emergency Services Laura Pysz was on the call and reports that she believes six or seven individuals, including at least one child, were living in the home. It is unclear at this time if one of the family members called 911 or whether the home monitoring system automatically alerted emergency services.

The fire is still under investigation, but preliminary findings indicate that the cause was an electrical short, Wilburn said. Also responding were Anmoore, Stonewood and Nutter Fort fire departments.

Pysz contacted the American Red Cross to arrange for temporary lodging for the family through a local hotel. She reports that all family members were unharmed, but obviously shook up.
