Bridgeport City Council Business Conducted Quickly and on Positive Note

By Julie Perine on October 27, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

At tonight’s Bridgeport City Council meeting, attention was called to several recent events, programs and athletic teams and proverbial pats on the back were extended to those who made it all happen.

Opening remarks by Mayor Bob Greer included those which paid tribute to Bridgeport Public Library’s Oct. 5 celebration which noted payoff of a 1.3 million dollar bond. Greer invited all members of the public to visit the facility, which has become an important asset to Bridgeport.

Greer also offered congratulatory remarks to the Greater Bridgeport Convention and Visitors Bureau and Bridgeport Conference Center for hosting the Baylor University football team. Team members and officials were housed at the Wingate Inn and utilized Bridgeport Conference Center when they came to West Virginia last weekend to face off against the Mountaineers of West Virginia University. Greer also offered a shout out to Bridgeport Parks and Recreation for hosting the annual Hay Bales and Tall Tales event Saturday at Bridgeport Recreation Complex.

Greer also informed Council and those in attendance at tonight’s meeting that Johnson Elementary School’s third grade classes visited Bridgeport Municipal Complex last Wednesday and that on this coming Wednesday, he will be sporting an Indian headdress and leading participants of Simpson Elementary’s ongoing Walk to School initiative, which has been in progress throughout the month of October.

City Manager Kim Haws went on to announce that the park at White Oaks has been completed and made an exciting announcement about the city’s Veterans Memorial. Groundbreaking for that memorial – which will be located on East Main Street across from All Saints Catholic Church – will be held on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

Later in the meeting, Councilor Diana Marra offered congratulations to the BHS Boys and Girls Soccer Teams, both which captured sectional titles Saturday and advance to regionals this week at Wayne Jamison Field. Councilor Dustin Vincent announced that Bridgeport Middle School Cross Country teams had captured county championships. Councilor Jim Wilson enlightened attendees that Bridgeport Fire Department, Bridgeport Lions’ Club and GFWC Woman’s Club of Bridgeport had combined forces to hold a very successful food drive this past Saturday. The food items collected will be distributed to local families through Shepherd’s Corner.

Tonight’s meeting also featured some special presentations. Leading off was a proclamation naming October Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Read by Mayor Greer, the proclamation was presented to Melissa Magill of Bonnie's Bus, a mobile mammography unit that travels across West Virginia and offers free on-site breast cancer screening.  See that presentation in the video below.

Tonight’s City Council meeting also featured the swearing in of Firefighter/EMT Brandon Marshall. Greer did the honors. Bridgeport Fire Chief Robert Seccuro shared that Marshall has been with the department for several years and that the formality had been overlooked.

Seccuro presented his department’s annual report to Council this evening. Look for a full report forthcoming on Connect-Bridgeport.

The public was also reminded tonight that Trick or Treat will be celebrated in the city 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30.
