A weekend fire has left a Bridgeport family without a home.

Just after 11 p.m. Friday, Bridgeport Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire on James Street, which resulted in what Chief Phil Hart called moderate damage to the interior of the home. His department and two others battled the fire for about an hour and a half.

“Also responding were Nutter Fort and Shinnston,” Hart said. “It was a team effort.”

Upon arriving at 510 James Street, firefighters immediately saw smoke rising from the attic and fire visible on the interior of the home, Hart said.

A family of four safely escaped the fire.

“There were two young children there – a six-year-old and at two-year-old, as well as a handicapped person,” Hart said. “The woman was able to get them all out of the home prior to the arrival of the fire department.”

Hart said a smoke detector kept the family safe.

“They were alerted by a working Ace smoke detector,” he said. “It was definitely a benefit, alerting them early enough to get out of the house.”

The fire appears to be accidental. According to a preliminary investigation, it resulted from electrical wiring.

The fire was contained. No other structures were affected.

During the time firefighters battled the blaze, James Street – from Hall Street to Philadelphia Avenue – was blocked. Bridgeport Police assisted with traffic.
