For decades Bridgeport High School has had an exemplary music program. From its award-winning jazz band to its over-the-top music showcase assembly, many students have found themselves immersed in one of the multitude of music classes BHS has to offer. To further expand on the talents of such students, BHS will soon have a Music Club.

Brooke Driscoll, president of the club, was the founder of this new addition to BHS. She currently plays the cello in the school’s orchestra and the piano, but has played a plethora of instruments in the past.  After taking Ms. Robin Bohn’s piano class last year, Brooke knew that BHS needed a club for students that had a talent for music.

“I’ve been playing music for years and my friends and I love playing duets and trios together. I wanted to start being able to spread music appreciation to other people as well. I went to Ms. Bohn with my idea because she was my teacher for a semester, and I knew she has a great understanding of music.”

After establishing the idea of a Music Club, Ms. Bohn contacted the Tri-M MusicSociety, who directs music clubs nationally, applied, and became a member. The Tri-M MusicSocietyrequires its club members to be enrolled or had previously been enrolled in a music- related class for at least one semester. It is a national organization that offers community service hours and scholarships.

At meetings, the club will discuss upcoming events and ideas to spread music in the community. The club aims to volunteer at nursing homes. UHC, church events, and other community activities. Its goal is to spread music appreciation and awareness in Harrison County. Brooke invites all of the club’s members to perform at events.

“We hope everyone can perform at least once throughout the year, whether it be singing, playing the violin, or even playing the maracas. You do not have to in order to be a member, though,” Brooke said.

The club will begin to have meetings sometime in October.
