Progress is being made on the city’s Lift Station Number Six and Headworks project according to a report from Bridgeport’s Superintendent of Utilities/Floodplain Manager Jared Cummons at Thursday’s Utility Board meeting.

“It’s taken a turn for the better, Cummons said in regard to the word at the lift station. “They cleaned up everything, put the road back. They are pulling out their heavy equipment today (Thursday). Monday, a crane comes in and gets set and Tuesday they will set the wet well in one shot. So hopefully, by the end of the business day on Tuesday we will have a wet well set.”

Cummons added that a concrete mix-up for the headworks has been resolved and the floor has been re-poured and the pouring for the walls is under way.

City Engineer Beth Fox gave the board an update on storm water studies, infrastructure improvements and FEMA.

She said there was a meeting with FEMA representatives last week about different areas of the city and one included in the FEMA reimbursement is the project by Burger King where a sewer line is being re-located.

Fox said an RFP (request for proposal) has been sent out to secure an engineering firm to move forward with plans to stabilize a slope near the slide area on Thompson Drive and she’s hopeful that information will be ready to present to City Council at Council’s first meeting in April.

Also, Fox said Thrasher continues to do storm water studies around Bridgeport and most recently provided recommendations for addressing the issue of runoff from Worthington Drive that comes down behind Pennsylvania Avenue.

In regard to the pending water line project near Meadowbrook Mall, Fox said they just received the easement from the mall two days ago and is hopeful the project will soon be moving forward.

“The contractor is ready, the pipe is ready,” Fox said.

Efforts are still in progress for the city asking all water customers to complete a service line survey in order to be in compliance with the EPA’s lead and copper rule.

Director of Public Works Tiny Grimes said his department has been working on a two-inch water line at Deegan Lake as well as storm drain work and sewer work on Willis Avenue.

Finance Director Sharon Hinkle provided the utility board with a financial report and said February’s numbers are in and everything looks good.

“Revenue is higher than expenditures,” Hinkle said. “That’s always a good sign.”

She said revenue is at 80 percent for water and 87 percent for sewer while expenditures are at 60 percent for water and 59 percent for sewer.
