Carol and Dick Gaynor Recognized by "Celebrating Volunteers" Program

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on September 29, 2015 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

The Miley Legal Group, in conjunction with WBOY TV, has selected Carol and Dick Gaynor of Shinnston to be the volunteers recognized for this month as part of the Celebrating Volunteers program. The Gaynors have been selected from nominations submitted for their volunteer work with the Auxiliary to the United Hospital Center. Carol has been a dedicated volunteer with the group since February of 2002, and Dick joined her beginning in March of 2006. With the combined 22 years of service, both have become well known faces at the hospital and the functions of the Auxiliary.

Denise Steffich, Director of Volunteer Services at United Hospital Center is quoted as saying that “Carol and Dick are the most wonderful, giving couple I have known. They would do anything for anyone if it was in their power to help.”

She further describes Carol as her “right hand man” and Dick as a proud Veteran with a soft heart.  They are inseparable, often times volunteering on the same project together.

The primary role of the Auxiliary is to support the hospital in a variety of ways, including assisting patients, engaging in fundraising activities, and putting forth the goals of the Hospital to the general public.  As part of that mission, Carol has served in numerous capacities with the Auxiliary, including Auxiliary President from 2007-2009, Holly Ball Co-Chair in 2012 and as Auxiliary Board Secretary from 2013 to 2015.  She currently serves in capacity as the Auxiliary Publicity Chair, managing local media contact and editing the quarterly newsletter.  Carol extended her service through the West Virginia Hospital Association Auxiliary Board as Treasurer and in 2007 was honored with the Auxiliary Volunteer of the Year.  She has served over 13,390 hours in many capacities within the Auxiliary, with that includes the hundreds of baked goods she has shared with other volunteers, hospital staff members, patients and even news reporters.

Dick has served over 3,085 hours to the Auxiliary with many of those hours behind the scenes.  As the Vending Chairperson, his role revolves around ensuring the vending areas of the Hospital are stocked and ready for visitors and patients.  He was the creator of the Hospital’s “Cheer Cart” that is used to console upset children in the waiting areas.  The use of his knowledge and skills has brought great comfort to many that have entered the facility.

“I am honored to celebrate the spirit and hard work of Carol and Dick Gaynor,”  said Tim Miley of The Miley Legal Group.  “Watching them spend their time at the hospital to ensure that the members of our community and their families are well cared for during difficult times is inspiring.”

The Celebrating Volunteers was a brain child of Gretchen Ross of WBOY TV and Tim Miley of The Miley Legal Group.  Each month, a volunteer will be chosen from multiple nominees submitted by the general public.  The volunteer selected will have demonstrated their commitment to an organization through volunteerism and support.

“Since the beginning of the Celebrating Volunteers program, I have seen and have been in awe at the amount of volunteers we have in North Central West Virginia, I can only hope to celebrate them all.”  Miley stated.
