After an invocation by Pastor Mike Hopkins of Simpson Creek Baptist Church and the Pledge of Allegiance led by Recorder Hank Murray, Bridgeport City Council honored the Bridgeport High School volleyball team for winning its first-ever state championship. On Nov. 10 at the Charleston Convention Center, the Tribe defeated Philip Barbour to take the Class AA crown. After being down two sets to one, the Indians rallied and took the next two sets, securing the victory. Scores were 25-17, 22-25, 21-25, 27-25 and 15-10.

Members of the team, along with Coach Ali Burton and Assistant Coach Grant Burton, received a proclamation from Mayor Andy Lang Monday evening during the meeting held in Council Chambers at Bridgeport Municipal Building. Also receiving a proclamation was Bridgeport Police Department to commemorate National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.

Council delved into the agenda, first addressing façade improvement grants as recommended by Bridgeport Development Authority. Approved unanimously were grants to Twinkles & Sprinkles and Amelia Properties, both businesses located on East Main Street.

Assistant City Manager Jimmy Smith then brought Council up to speed on the proposed mausoleum project at Bridgeport Cemetery. One qualified bid in the amount of $81,716 – including a five percent contingency – was received by Matthews Gibralter Mausoleum International Companies out of Pittsburgh, Smith said. Council voted to accept the bid which Lang previously explained will encompass preliminary architectural and engineering services, such as drawings and proposed budgets. Lang said through surveys, residents have expressed several times over the years that they would like to see a mausoleum implemented at the city cemetery. Council will move forward with the project as more information is gathered.

The city’s governing body also approved several appointments to Bridgeport Emergency Services Council. Those serving are Kerry Hess, John Wilson, Lowell Maxey, Ken Winkie, Ray Shaw, Brad Ford and Paul Calvert.

The only remaining item of business was the contract for City Manager Kim Haws. As previously reported, Council voted not to seek negotiations on the contract which expires June 30 of this year. Read that story HERE.
