City Council to Begin Budget Discussions, Hear Report from Police Department at Monday's Meeting

Bridgeport City Council will feature a light agenda Monday, Feb. 27 with just two items scheduled for discussion.

Following an invocation by Pastor Ben Moses of Simpson Creek Baptist Church and the Pledge of Allegiance, Council will take care of formalities – including approval of last meeting’s minutes – before delving into business.

Mayor Bob Greer and City Manager Kim Haws will present their respective reports, after which Bridgeport Police Chief John Walker will provide his annual department report. Walker will apprise Council of activities over the past year, including the department’s involvement in various drug-related arrests and incidents.

The only item of new business is the potential appointment of Mark Bonamico to the Bridgeport Development Authority for a term of three years. Bonamico, a local business owner and contractor, is new to that board, said Community Development Director Randy Spellman.

“Actually Tom Bush had served on the development authority and his term was up for reappointment. Due to other commitments, he could not accept reappointment,” Spellman said. “So we went ahead and discussed some potential candidates and Mark Bonamico was discussed and he thereafter agreed to serve.”

A local business owner and contractor, Bonamico will be an asset to the city, he said.

“No. 1, Mark has Bridgeport at his heart. He’s a true ‘Bridgeporter,’” Spellman said. “He’s a businessman and has invested into some of the buildings on Main Street and has been a huge part of our revitalization of Main Street. With that type of experience and commitment, he will be a great addition to the board.”

Council will thereafter take care of any budget revisions that may arise. As of now, there are none on the agenda.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Bridgeport Municipal Building on West Main Street. It will be preceded by a 6:15 p.m. work session. According to City Clerk Andrea Kerr, the work session will serve as Council's first budget meeting for the 2017-2018 fiscal year.
