To remember those who continue to sacrifice for our freedom, the City of Bridgeport is hosting a Memorial Day observance at Bridgeport Cemetery.

Beginning at noon will be a short ceremony, followed by refreshments and community fellowship through 3 p.m.

“I encourage people to come for a day of remembrance for those that have fought for our country and have passed on,” said Tricia Bombardiere, office administrator at Bridgeport Cemetery.

A first-time event, the observance will include participation by the Harrison County Honor Guard, members which will play Taps and carry out a 12-gun salute.

“The Honor Guard may be bringing ROTC with them and we will read off the veterans that passed this year,” Bombardiere said.

Although the affair will feature a military flair, the occasion is to pay tribute to all former community members laid to rest at Bridgeport Cemetery.

"This is an opportunity for the city to show appreciation to the families and friends of those who have loved ones at our cemetery," said Assistant City Manager Jimmy Smith.

Those in attendance will be provided with free hot dogs, cake and drinks.

“I believe this event is important to acknowledge the men and women who nobly gave of themselves,” Bombardiere said. “Memorial Day is about honoring and remembering our veterans, having cookouts with friends and family and decorating for the occasion. We can do all of that together. This event will allow us to bring together families, patrons and community at Bridgeport Cemetery. Bring your family and celebrate with us.”
