Claire Lohmann and Austin Sponaugle have been named Bridgeport High School Students of the Month for May, 2019.

Only seniors are eligible for this honor, said Principal Matt DeMotto. Those who have been selected were chosen by the entire staff by ballot.

“We asked that teachers consider a variety of variables including character, respect for others, effort, attendance, extra-curricular
participation, leadership, trustworthiness and academics,” he said. “We select 10 boys and 10 girls throughout the year and honesty, we have far more than 10 who meet the above criteria.  This is always a tough decision for our faculty we appreciate the seriousness with which they take this process.”

Claire Lohmann is the daughter of Mike and Amy Lohmann. She serves as senior class secretary and is a Student Council executive board member. Claire is also a member of the jazz band, journalism program, dance ensemble, National Honor Society and Drug-Free Club. She has been active in theater and appeared in multiple musicals at Bridgeport High School, most recently in Narnia and Mama Mia!

During her time at BHS, she ran cross country, played soccer and has been a four-year member of the track team, specializing in pole vault. Claire has attended Camp Kno-Koma, the diabetes camp for West Virginia children, for a number of years and now serves as a counselor-in-training. She attends Bridgeport United Methodist Church and volunteers as a buddy for the Bridgeport Little League Challenger Division. Claire will attend West Virginia University in the fall and has been accepted into the Honors College and nursing program.

Austin Sponaugle is the son of Jeremie Sponaugle and Tarra Shields. This year, he was named First Team All-County, 1st Team Big 10 and 1st Team All-State for defensive line in football. Austin has also played four years for the BHS state championship baseball team.

He is a member of National Honor Society, Drug-Free Club, Ping Pong Club and Key Club. In his free time, he enjoys hunting, fishing, going to the gym and hanging out with friends. Austin also works for his father’s company on weekends.

Austin plans to attend WVU and study petroleum engineering.
