The latest children’s book by Colleen Driscoll has been released.

“’Grandma, I Need a Hug’ enlivens the grandparent bond with their grandchild,” said the local author. “The story allows grandparents to feel like a kid again by involving them in the game of bedtime hugs and goofiness. Who wouldn’t want another hug at bedtime?

As has her other titles – including the popular “Piper the Elf” stories – Driscoll said this one is already touching hearts and relationships.

“(This book) has brought so much comfort and laughter between children and their grandparents,” said Driscoll, who shared a sneak peek of the storyline.

“Every time the grandmother tucks her grandson in bed and begins to leave the room, the boy raises his head and says, ‘Grandma, I need a hug.’ He convinces her that he needs more than one hug. Then two hugs. Then three hugs.”

The companion book to the 2020 “Mommy, I Need a Hug” was inspired by reader feedback and is timely.

“Fans had written to me and asked if I’d write a Grandma version,” Driscoll said. “During this time of COVID when children haven’t been able to visit their grandparents often, this story brings added comfort and hopefully a better night’s sleep. A win-win for all children, parents, grandparents, and guardians!”

Writing children’s stories has brought Driscoll many incredible rewards, she said.

“First, I enjoy seeing the excitement in a child’s face as they open a book and begin to read or as they listen and follow along when someone else reads. Knowing that my stories touch the lives of adults is heartwarming. I also find intrinsic satisfaction in letting my imagination go wild and creating stories from a stray thought.”

It all started with the 2012 “Piper the Elf Trains Santa” after a stomach virus confined Driscoll to bed on Christmas Day.

“When I recovered, I was upset that I had missed out on the Christmas festivities with my family. I asked myself how Santa and his elves spent their days the rest of the year, and I let my imagination take the story from there,” she said. “Then I was hooked on writing.”

“Grandma, I need a Hug” contains 32 colorful pages. It is illustrated by 17-year-old Naomi Brown of Grafton, who plans to pursue a career in the art field.

As are Driscoll’s other books, it is available on Amazon:
