Bridgeport City Council’s only meeting for the month of December has a fairly light agenda. The meeting takes place 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9 in Council Chambers at Bridgeport Municipal Building. Pastor Ben Moses of Simpson Creek Baptist Church will open the meeting in prayer, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

After approval of minutes from prior meetings and reports from Mayor Andy Lang and City Manager Randy Wetmore, Council will present a pair of proclamations.

The Bridgeport High School DECA Club will be presented a proclamation recognizing DECA Day. Under the direction of Trina Runner, BHS has an active chapter of the national Distributive Education Clubs of America. DECA Day is designed to promote the organization, recruit members and recognize accomplishments.

A proclamation will also be presented to Bridgeport Youth Football Peewee White team. Under the coaching of Mario Bombardiere, the Little Indians captured the 2019 Mountaineer Youth Football PeeWee championship on Nov. 17.

Reports by Fire Chief Phil Hart and Police Chief John Walker will follow.

Walker’s report isn’t his usual. He will provide Council with information about No-Shave November.

“The national program started a couple years ago and we thought about participating every year,” Walker said. “We seem to have so many folks – employees and their relatives – who have battled cancer, so we thought it would be great to do this and raise money for the American Cancer Society.”

Members of Bridgeport Police Department, along with City Manager Randy Wetmore, sported beards during the month of November and raised donations. Walker said $670 was raised. He hopes to continue the program next year.

Hart will talk about a citizen assistance plan designed to help identify individuals with special needs who may require extra assistance in the event of emergency.

Following any public comments, Council will address two new items of business. First, the governing body will consider and act on the Bridgeport Development Authority’s recommendation for a façade improvement grant.

“The BDA approved a façade improvement grant Wednesday for Conservation Iron,” said Community Development Director Andrea Kerr. “The property is located on Thompson Drive and it is their plan to put $100,000 into the façade. After the project is complete, I will do an audit and the BDA will approve payment.”

The maximum payout on the grant is $10,000, Kerr said.

Barring any necessary budget revisions or authorizations, Council’s last item of business will be addressing a request for approval of amendments to Parts II and VII of the Police Civil Service Commission regulations.

Monday’s meeting will be preceded by a one-hour work session.
