Driver of Pickup Responsible for Near Head-On Interstate Accident Arrested for DUI

Bridgeport's Danielle Hampton was traveling north on I-79 Monday afternoon when a pickup truck from the southbound lane flipped across the median and was heading straight toward her.

"I was able to swerve and miss him, but all I could think of was him hitting us head on," she said.

After Hampton pulled her Toyota van off to the side of the road, her sister - who was traveling with her - went to check on the driver of the pickup, which came to rest on its top in the far right northbound lane.

He had no injuries, but was obviously driving under the influence, Hampton said.

Bridgeport Police Lt. M.J. Lemley has confirmed that an individual involved in the 3:35 p.m. accident on I-79 near the 121 mile marker has been arrested for DUI.

The pickup involved, Lemley said, was a 1998 Ford Ranger. The Ranger did strike a 2017 Toyota Camry in the northbound lanes before coming to a rest, Lemley said. Witnesses said debris from the truck hit the Camry. Damage was done to the left side and roof of the vehicle. There were no hospital transports and both vehicles were towed from the scene, he said.

Northbound lanes of I-79 were shut down for about one hour while vehicles and debris were cleared from the roadway.

Investigating officer is Sgt. Floyd. Bridgeport Fire and Emergency Services also responded to the wreck. Photos are courtesy of Dan Riggs Towing and Danielle Hampton.
