Dynamic Physical Therapy Offering Free Assessments in October for National Physical Therapy Month

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on October 12, 2015 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Therapists from Dynamic Physical Therapy of Bridgeport are offering free balance and fall assessments during the month of October in celebration of National Physical Therapy Month (NPTM).

This campaign aims to foster understanding of the symptoms and treatment for dizziness and other balance and equilibrium issues, and to urge those experiencing the symptoms to seek treatment from a professional.

“Balance problems affect people of all ages,” says Dynamic Physical Therapy’s Amy Manning, PT, DPT. “I invite anyone to come see us at Dynamic Physical Therapy for a free, comprehensive balance screening. Such a screening will provide an accurate diagnosis and, if needed, a plan for the necessary treatment.”

About one in three adults over the age of 65 in the United States falls each year. Falls often result in emergency room visits and hospitalizations, and can require long-term recovery.

Maintaining proper balance is critical to aging well and retaining mobility. “Although age is a risk factor for falling, falls are not an inevitable part of aging,” explains Manning. “A physical therapist can determine what factors are contributing to someone’s loss of mobility, risk for falls, and/or decreased confidence.”

A plan of care from a physical therapist helps reduce fall risks. Group and home-based exercise programs can improve balance and reduce the chance of significant injuries, such as hip fractures.

Physical therapists understand the anatomical and physiological changes of aging. They integrate scientific evidence, clinical judgment, and assessment of the patient’s abilities, and take into account any preexisting health conditions and medications, before making exercise recommendations.
