In celebration of National Dog Day, Eastern Pet Supply will host a Doggie Ice Cream Social Aug. 26 at its Johnson Avenue store.

From Great Danes and German Shepherds to Terriers and Shih Tzu, all canines are invited to the celebration which will feature frozen dog treats, games, prizes and other activities.

“When we realized National Dog Day was coming up, we wanted to get community dogs together for some end-of-summer fun,” said Jenny Starkey Reed, Eastern Pet Supply marketing director.

In addition to complimentary “brothsickle” - doggie ice cream sample cups – and other pup product samples, coupons and deals, the event will include activities sponsored by Sprint.

“They contacted us,” Reed said. “They’ll be giving away dog bowls and leashes and will set up a few games.”

To provide owners with frozen treats too, Nannie’s Ice Cream Bus will be on hand. Those human treats will cost $2 each.

The event, which will take place 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, is still a work in progress, but Reed wanted locals to save the date. As National Dog Day is partially to bring awareness to the number of dogs in shelters and rescue facilities in need of homes, Reed hopes to incorporate an adoption center and is working with local Humane Society representatives in that endeavor.

National Dog Day is also about celebrating all furry friends; those which work in law enforcement and rescue, as therapy dogs and all those who just bring happiness to our lives and households.

Eastern Pet Supply is located at 1400 Johnson Avenue at Blake Center, just across from Sheetz.
