Edgar A. Hess, Former Bridgeport Mayor, Passes Away at Age 92

Edgar A. Hess of Bridgeport died on August 29, 2014 at Meadowview Manor. He was predeceased by his wife of 72 years, Twylia Y. Hess, his parents, Weonda and Ray Hess, seven brothers and sisters, Ruth  Hess Gianni, Betty Hess Smith, Jerry Hess Kinney, Helen Hess Wetzel, George L. Hess, Dr. Robert Hessand Dr. David R. Hess, and daughter-in-law, Nancy Hess.
 
He is survived by his sons, Edgar A. (Bud) Hess II and wife Gerry of Bridgeport, Kerry A. Hess and wife Suzanne of Bridgeport, Gregory G. Hess and wife Candy of Port Charlotte Florida, and S. Scott Hess and his wife Dianne of St. Petersburg, Florida. He is survived by nine grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Edgar was a former mayor of Bridgeport and was active in the community for many years. He was on the Sanitary Board, the Library Board, Region Six Planning Commission and City Council prior to becoming mayor. He was instrumental in providing a new library for the City. He was a member of Kiwanis, Lions Club, Rotary and many other organizations.
 
He was a graduate of the School of Hard Knocks and was awarded an honorary Engineering Degree by West Virginia University. Edgar was active in the Bridgeport United Methodist Church for most of his life. He served on many boards and committees and was a faithful member and worker of the Methodist Men for over 70 years.
 
Edgar was a World War II veteran and served in the United States Navy during the war and saw action in the South Pacific where his ship, The USS Ominay Bay, was fired on and sunk during one battle he participated in. He returned from the war and was employed by Union Carbide Corporation where he had been employed before the war. He retired as a Senior Engineer from Carbide after 43 years of service. Edgar's life was spent serving God and others. He was devoted to his wife and children and then to their children. Family was of ultimate importance to him and he lived a life of faith and honor every day believing that being a good example was the best way to be a good father and grandfather. He was loved by many and will be missed by all.
 
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in their father's memory to the Bridgeport United Methodist Church Permanent Fund, 251 Worthington Drive, Bridgeport, WV 26330 or the Bridgeport Public Library, 1200 Johnson Avenue, Bridgeport, WV 26330.
 
Friends will be received at the Ford Funeral Home, 215 East Main Street, Bridgeport, WV on Monday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. and Tuesday in the Bridgeport United Methodist Church from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. The funeral service will be celebrated in the church on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at 11:00 AM with Reverend Dr. Ken A. Ramsey presiding. The interment will follow in the Bridgeport Cemetery.
 
The United States Navy and the Lewis County Honor Guard will provide military rites Condolences may be extended to the family at www.fordfuneralhomes.com. The Hess family has entrusted the care and arrangements to the Ford Funeral Home, 215 East Main Street, Bridgeport.
