Fitness - Take it Outside: Enrollment Open for STRONG Camp

By Julie Perine on March 28, 2013 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

STRONG Moms and Kids wound up a series of classes just in time for spring break. When school resumes, instructor Emily Stapleton will begin a whole new fitness session.

This time, she’s taking it outside.

Beginning April 8, Stapleton will host a one-hour, Monday-Wednesday-Friday STRONG Camp with start options at 8 a.m. and 9 a.m.

Classroom settings will include the Benedum Civic Center lawn, city tennis courts and walking trail to City Park, among other locations. During inclement weather, sessions will be held inside the Civic Center.

“It’s a back-to-basics type of workout with a lot of body weight exercises, squats, lunges and planks with everything taught at varying fitness levels. Whether you’re extreme or just getting started, it will be taught at the right intensity,” Stapleton said.

The sessions will be heavy on interval work – timed high-intensity exercise followed by periods of rest and/or less strenuous movement.

“All of our exercises are functional movements – activities that help with everyday life and core balance, making you more efficient in whatever you do,” Stapleton said.

Women of all ages are invited to take the course. Cost is $96 for a four-week session. Those who choose the 9 a.m. start time may bring their young children for no additional charge. The kids will enjoy their own age-appropriate fitness activities, working the body and the imagination.

Kids’ activities will be held indoors and outside, including obstacle course, balance beam, stability ball, hopping and dancing activities, as well as character play and imaginary adventures.

“We like to call it active play,” Stapleton said. “While we do provide structured activity for them, nothing is required. We provide the activities and they do what they’re comfortable with.”

As Harrison County Schools will not be in session Mon., April 8, the start-off STRONG Camp class is open to the entire family.
“You can bring your kids of any age to either the 8 or 9 a.m. class,” Stapleton said. “Rather than providing a separate class for kids, we’ll do a family-type workout together.”

Although STRONG Camp is utilizing the Benedum Civic Center, it is not a Bridgeport Parks & Recreation activity. Registration can be made by visiting www.mystrongfitness.com or calling Stapleton at 304-841-5653.
