Former All-State, All-Big-Ten BHS Baseball Player, Area Businessman Heath Skidmore Passes at Age 49

Heath Raymond Skidmore, 49, of Maple Lake, Bridgeport, passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at UPMC Hospital, Pittsburgh after a brief illness. He was born in Fairmont on June 13, 1967, a son of Colleen Bailey Skidmore, who survives in Bridgeport, and the late James R. Skidmore.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Maria (Folio) Skidmore, whom he married on August 20, 1994.

Also surviving are his two sons, Tyler James Skidmore and Corey Michael Skidmore; his brother, Ryan Skidmore and his wife Kris, Greenville, SC and his sister, Paige Rohrig and her husband Josh of Atlanta, GA; one nephew Preston Rohrig and two nieces Keely and Lindsey Skidmore; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was also preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Cliff and Cindy Bailey and his paternal grandparents, Nadine and Raymond “Dinks” Skidmore.

Heath was a graduate of Bridgeport High School, Class of 1985. In 1985 he was All State and All Big Ten and All County Baseball. In 1984 he was All County center fielder and until recently he held the state record for 45 consecutive stolen bases. He was also offered tryouts with the Kansas City Royals and the Atlanta Braves. Heath was a graduate of WVU in 1994 with Bachelors in Criminal Justice and was working towards his Masters in Safety. He had previously worked for Nationwide Insurance as a claims adjuster. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid sports fan following the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pirates. His passion was watching his kids play baseball and basketball and was so proud of his boys.

Family and friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport on Friday, March 24, 2017 from 2-8 p.m., where funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday with Reverend Jim Lang presiding. Interment will follow in Bridgeport Cemetery.
