Former Victory Teacher and Coach, Business CEO, Civic and Community Leader, Marquis Garrett, Passes

Marquis Earl Garrett, Sr., age 82, of Clarksburg, West Virginia, passed away unexpectedly at his home on September 6th. Born on November 6th, 1941, in Clarksburg, he was the beloved son of Willard Earl and Virginia Starling Garrett.
Mark, as he was affectionately known, graduated from Washington Irving High School and represented the school at Boy’s State in 1959. Mark graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1963. During his college years, he was a proud member of the Theta Chi Fraternity and lettered on the football team. Mark also attended Harvard University’s School of International Business.
Mark began his career as an English and History teacher at Victory High School, where he also served as an assistant coach for the football team. His passion for education and sports was evident throughout his life.
In addition to his parents, Mark was preceded in death by his loving wife of 41 years, Ann Wilson Garrett.
He is survived by his devoted children: Katherine Ann Garrett Kiger (Mike) of Huntington, WV; Jeffrey Wilson Garrett (Sue) of Cornelius, NC; Elinor Elizabeth Garrett (Sue Chase) of Sherrill’s Ford, NC; Karen Lynn Garrett Mazza (Albert) of Mooresville, NC; Janet Elise Garrett Babcock of Davidson, NC; Douglas Heazelton Garrett (Jaime) of Fairmont, WV; Amy Starling Garrett of Harmony, NC; and Amanda Wilson Garrett Bruno (Brian) of Dayton, OH. Mark was a cherished grandfather to seven grandchildren: Jeffrey Wilson Garrett, II (Carrie), Lindsey McConnell Adams (Bill), Sara Elise Babcock Whaley (Tyler), Jordan Douglas Garrett, Trey Herchel Mazza, Carmen Leeann Babcock, and Tanner Douglas Garrett. He was also a proud great-grandfather to four: Carrington Jae Garrett, Emery Anne Garrett, Grant Carter Garrett, and Amelia McConnell Adams.
Mark is also survived by his brother, Thomas Wayne Garrett (Lois) of Fairmont, WV; sister-in-law, Sara Wilson Bennett of Scottsdale, AZ; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is also survived by his companion of many years, Marion Seeley.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, William Charles Garrett; son, Marquis Earl (Mark) Garrett, Jr.; and grandson, Ross Wilson Babcock.
Mark was the past president and CEO of Clarksburg Casket Company. He served on the board of the Lumberport Shinnston Gas Company and was past president of the Casket Manufacturers’ Association of America. He also served on the Labor & Union’s Funds of Charleston, WV. Mark was a member of the Hermon Lodge No. 6 A.F. & A.M. in Clarksburg and the Nemesis Shriners in Parkersburg, WV. He was past president of the Clarksburg Rotary Club and a long-time member of the Clarksburg Country Club and Clarksburg Presbyterian Church, where he served as Deacon, Elder, and Treasurer. Mark was also a member of the HOA Board of Maisons-Sur-Mer at Myrtle Beach, SC, where he and Ann made their second home for many years.
Mark was an avid fan of WVU football and basketball, and he also loved rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates. His love for his family and the Mountaineers was a cornerstone of his life, bringing joy and pride to those around him.
Family and friends will be received at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home 329 E. Main Street Clarksburg, WV, on Wednesday September 11, 2024 from 4 until 8pm Funeral Services will be conducted at the funeral home on September 12, 2024 at 11am. Interment will be held immediately following the service at Bridgeport Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association, in memory of Marquis Earl Garrett, Sr.
