From the Courtroom to the Laundry Room, WV Lawyer Launches Environmentally-Conscious Business

Heidi Holland Seamon, an attorney who has practiced for almost a decade and a half, announces the launch of Essential Oil Boost™, a company based on the benefits of all-natural essential oils. The company’s debut product is Have a Ball!™ wool dryer balls—an environmentally-conscious and healthy alternative to fabric softener and dryer sheets. Clients can choose from nine color combinations and eight embellishment options for each custom set of four handmade 100% wool dryer balls. In addition, clients can select an essential oil sample with each Have a Ball!™ set for great smelling laundry!

A mother of three and busy professional, Seamon started researching and using all-natural essential oils two years ago. “Like most families with two working professionals, we often took the path of least resistance…a dryer sheet is easy to pull out and throw in every load of laundry without thinking about what you are doing to your family’s health,” Seamon said. “When I saw the long list of chemicals in dryer sheets and fabric softeners, I cringed. My family had already been using essential oils in other capacities (even to flavor water!) and, as an avid knitter, it seemed a logical progression to create wool dryer balls and use 100% natural essential oils to scent them.”

Her fear is warranted. In 1991, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released a document revealing that potent carcinogens are present in fabric softeners and dryer sheets. Included within the long list of chemicals is benzyl acetate, which has been linked to pancreatic cancer. Ethanol, another ingredient, is on the EPA’s Hazardous Waste list and can cause central nervous system disorders. Limonene, a known lung irritant, was also prominent, as was chloroform, which is a carcinogen and neurotoxin. Additionally, liquid fabric softeners were found to contain formaldehyde.

Fabric softeners and dryer sheets are specifically designed to impart chemicals onto clothing, instead of being rinsed away. These chemicals will be absorbed by your skin over time. Plus, when fabric softeners are exposed to heat (such as hot water, a dryer, or an iron), toxic vapors can be released into the environment.

“Our skin is our largest organ; it is porous and absorbent,” said Seamon. “We buy organic foods, reject growth hormones in our meats and milk, and avoid artificial sweeteners… so why do we spend all day and night with toxic chemicals against our skin?”

A career do-gooder who directed a statewide program that engaged volunteer private attorneys in providing free legal assistance to qualifying individuals, Seamon sees this new business venture as a way to continue to help others and our environment.

Have a Ball!™wool dryer balls are double felted so they will not unravel, fade, or run onto clothes. The balls bounce around and separate clothing, allowing air to circulate more freely. In addition, the 100% natural wool construction helps absorb moisture from the load, which reduces drying time by up to 25%, uses less energy, and decreases static. The addition of a few drops of essential oils on the dryer balls at the end of the drying cycle will lightly scent the laundry.

“Believe me, I get it. Everyone is busy and we all want healthy families. We also want soft clothes that smell fresh and clean, without utilizing harmful chemicals,” said Seamon. “Essential oils can boost our overall well-being; maybe having it all—and having a ball—is within reach.”
