Girls Varsity Soccer Team on a Roll; Pick up Second Win of the Season

Bridgeport High School Girls Soccer is on a roll.

Under threatening skies Wednesday night at Wayne Jamison Field, the Lady Indians captured a 1-0 win over Elkins High School, bringing their season record to 2-0.

Coach John Reese said Wednesday’s win was a big one and that scoring action got under way early in the game.

“This was a battle of two of the top teams in the Big Ten Conference,” he said. “Mikayla Oliverio found Amanda Saymon open in front of the net and Amanda drove it home to put us in front  1-0 in the first 10 minutes of the game.”

Both returning starters from the 2013 season, Oliverio and Saymon are working the ball very well together this season, Reese said.

“It is beautiful to see them pick it up again after a year layoff,” he said.

As it was during Friday’s contest against South Harrison on Friday, the Tribe’s defense was outstanding Wednesday.

“The back line was solid, allowing only two shots on goal, which Morgan Willlis handled easily,” Reese said. “Morgan also came out and cleared several through balls sent deep into our territory.”

Reese also praised his midfielders.

“Natalie (Prater), Emily (Arbogast), and Gabriela (Hemeon) controlled everything in their area and started multiple attacks,” he said. “Maleehah Saab had a solid game up front as well.”

The Lady Indians will have to be on their toes next week.

“We have South Harrison Saturday,  Morgantown Monday, then Fairmont Senior on Thursday, followed by RCB on the following Tuesday.  “So, it continues to be a tough run for us.”

The JV team plays in Grafton this evening with play scheduled for 7 p.m.
