Halloween Scarecrow Winner Announced as ABB Looks Forward to its Next Event

By Julie Perine on November 11, 2018 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Halloween has come and gone and so have this year’s Main Street scarecrows. The whimsical creatures which greeted those traveling our city’s main corridor have been tucked away by business owners; some who are already conjuring up ideas for next year’s display.

The showcase is sponsored annually by the Associated Businesses of Bridgeport. As always, one of the scarecrows has been named this year’s winner and creators will receive the ABB’s traveling plaque and bragging rights for this year’s competition.

Selected by popular vote by Connect-Bridgeport readers is scarecrow #23, the Allstate “Mayhem Guy,” created by Joe Spadafore: Allstate Insurance of 140 West Main Street. The popular TV ad personality declaring that “Mayhem is everywhere” received 1,918 votes.

Receiving an impressive second place – with 1,501 votes – was scarecrow #4; the creation of Dan Riggs Towing, located on Route 50 East. The chained skeleton bears a sign which reads, “Slow down, Move over, It’s the law.”

Also utilizing a skeleton theme was the Oliverio’s Florist scarecrow #3, which with 875 votes landed third place. Owned by Jerry Joliff, the florist is located at 241 East Main Street.

Connect-Bridgeport and the Associated Businesses of Bridgeport thank members of the public for their support of this year’s contest. The ABB’s next event is Light Up Night, scheduled for Thurs., Nov. 29 in downtown Bridgeport. All city businesses are encouraged to join the ABB. Dues are $80 per year. Member businesses wishing to take part in Light Up Night - by hosting a tent along Main Street and treating town’s people to free holiday goodies – must complete a Light Up Night application and return to the ABB by Nov. 9.
