Hands-On Learning: With Help of Parent Engineers, JES Students Build Flashlights

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on September 21, 2017 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

SUBMITTED BY JOHNSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FIFTH GRADE:

Johnson Elementary School fifth grade is all about hands-on learning experiences. The faculty knows that children learn more when they do more. One class was able to experience that with the help of two volunteers, Doug and Rose Rossana, both of whom are engineers.

The Rossanas built flashlights with the fifth grade class. This project included assembling a battery/power pack, attaching wires to make a connection, and wiring an LED light for the actual “light." Students were led through the project by Mr. and Mrs. Rossana while learning about connectivity, circuits, completing a circuit, and voltage.

Mr. Rossana is an electrical engineer and Mrs. Rossana is an industrial engineer. They discussed their education as well as their career choices and the part which science and math plays in their everyday lives. Teacher Taya Trent said the students loved the project.
