The Harrison County Parks and Recreation will host a “Celebrate Fall with Us” event at the Harrison County Recreation Complex on Sunday, October 18th from 11:00 am through 4:30 pm. There will be a Hot Wheels 1/64th scale drag race in the morning to start things off followed by a free concert with local bands the Grey Agents and V-Train.

“We are excited to host an event like this,” remarked Bridgeport native Jack Cann, who works as Recreation Specialist with the Parks and Rec. “The opportunity to showcase our building and tell about our program is the purpose of the event. And having a free concert to draw in the public as well as car races for the kids just adds more excitement for the day.”

The die-cast races will have an 11:00 am registration and first race at 11:30. The 50-foot track, owned by Kenny Carter of Philippi, is the longest in the country and has been a popular draw to the public. All participants will have the opportunity to purchase cars on site or bring their own.

“There has been a rise in popularity with the collecting of small scale cars. Based on the age and production, there has been some cars valued into the tens of thousands. We hosted an event for the Sheriff’s department a few months ago and the place was packed with people who wanted to race. And not just the kids, as parents took a chance to see if their car could win,” said Cann.

Starting approximately at 1:30, the Grey Agents, a local band who plays classic rock from the 70s and 80s, will take the stage in front of the main entrance. Following the set, the group V-train will take us home with their blend of classic and southern rock. An area will be marked off for people to watch the concert, but, there will be no seating available so bring a chair.

“We wanted to give some local bands a chance to display themselves for future business and having this free concert might open some more opportunities for them,” said Cann. “We encourage everyone to bring a chair to sit and listen to the bands perform.  We will stage an area in the parking lot for the event, but there will not be seating provided.”

Throughout the day, the people will be able to see some of the enrichment activities we do with the kids. At our activities shelter, one can learn from our staffs about the critters and crawlers that roam through the woods. Or, take a hike on our nature trail and learn about the 30 different species of trees that we have on property and learn of their purpose in our society.
