Geological Formations LLC will host its first annual Dinosaur, Fossil, Gem and Mineral show from June 10-11 at the Harrison County Recreation Complex located on route 19 south across from Sunny Croft Golf Course.

Hours for the event will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and there will be hourly drawings for prices.

Ray Garton, curator for the annual Walking with Dinosaurs Program through Harrison County Parks and Recreation, notes how events like this teaches about the science of geology.

“We go to several shows throughout the United States and most vendors have a vast knowledge of what we are bringing to parks and rec,” Garton said. “With my wife, Mary Ellen and the Ryba family, our goal is to help educated those who attend about Geology and Paleontology. Not too many get a chance to handle rare minerals or see real fossils in person and this is way where they can do that.”

While admission is free, there will be plenty of opportunities for those to purchase items from fossils to gems including geodes that can be cracked on sight. Everyone who attends will have a chance to win a replica sabretooth cat skull or scientifically known as the Smilodon.  In fact, Garton was one of the first to find the remains of the cat in the Greenbrier area.

“Fossils can be found anywhere here in the Mountain State and that peaks the interest of many who love the hobby of fossil hunting,” said Doug Comer, Deputy Director of the Parks Department. “When the Garton family approached the department about the event, we thought it would be a great event for the citizens of the county and surrounding areas. We had great attendance during our last dinosaur exhibit and having this will allow those with interest in other fields of science to come and explore the venue.”

With many vendors on site and plenty or items to look at or purchase, this event is definitely worth an opportunity for families looking for a day or fossil hunting and spending time at the park.
