To close out Child Abuse Prevention Month, CASA programs of Harrison and Marion counties are hosting a Superhero 5K this coming Saturday at White Oaks. Groups and individuals are encouraged to run or walk the course to support abused and neglected children.

“This is our biggest fundraiser. It’s our fourth annual event, but the first in Bridgeport so we’re pretty excited,” said Alisha Madia, Harrison County CASA executive director. “(White Oaks Developer) Woody Thrasher has been very accommodating, offering the space and helping with the route. It’s a great location and Bridgeport does a really good job making sure safety is priority.”

The mission of the event –and the agency – is to prevent child abuse and serve as a voice for children who are victims.

“As child abuse continues and obvious issues with drug problems, even more children enter the court system and there are not enough volunteers. We use this money to recruit and train volunteers to advocate for the children," Madia said.

In addition to the main event, there will be a 1K Villain Chase for kids. The first 100 children registered will receive a CASA cape to show they are a superhero helping other children in need. The event will also feature games, activities and door prizes.

“We’ll have a photo booth and typical carnival games like ring toss, bean bag toss and duck pond. We noticed that the majority of the little ones registered for the kids’ run are age 7 and under so we wanted to have some fun activities for them,” Madia said. “We also have 28 prizes to give away. All registered participants are eligible for those prizes, which include an overnight stay at Stonewall Resort.”

All participants are encouraged to sport superhero gear.

“Most do dress up. Very few don’t,” Madia said. “We have a costume contest for adults and children, rewarding them for showing their spirit.”

The organization thanks all businesses who have served as super sponsors for this year’s event.

All proceeds benefit area CASA programs, which were established so every abused and neglected child had a voice in court and are ensured the chance for a safe, permanent home.

Online registration has closed, but participants can register 8-10 a.m. race day. Kids’ activities begin at 8:30 a.m. with Villain Chase at 9:15 a.m. and the main race event at 10 a.m. All activities and race start will be located near Steptoe & Johnson.

“It’s all going to be right there at the top of the parking lot in the grassy area and registration is in the field directly across from Steptoe & Johnson. We’ll have awards ceremony and kids’ events in that field also," Madia said.

There will be plenty of signs and Bridgeport Police Department will be on site. More than 150 participants have pre-registered, but the organization is expecting many to register Saturday morning. Participants have the option to wear a disposable timing chip for competitive racing. Overall winners and those in each age/gender category will be awarded. Some just want to walk leisurely and that is fine too, Madia said. Because of the mixed terrain on the race route, strollers are not recommended.

Typically, CASA raises around $12,000 through the 5K.

“This year, we’re already close to $18,000 so we’re really excited,” Madia said.
