High Winds Take Down Trees, Power Lines; Area Under Severe Weather Watch Through 8 p.m.

The storm that suddenly hit the area has come along with some damaging winds. Several trees and power lines are down, with one power line fire reported within the city.

Areas with downed trees and lines include Broadway Avenue, Orchard Street, Doctors Drive, Geneva Street, Water Street, East Main Street and Route 131.

Parks and Recreation Director Don Burton reports that a huge tree went down at Bridgeport Cemetery, knocking over a monument and moving another. At Bridgeport Recreation Complex, about 60 feet of fence has been wiped out, he said.

Bridgeport Emergency Services Coordinator Laura Pysz encourages motorists to stay off the roads.

The area is under a severe weather watch through 8 p.m. today and there may very well be additional heavy winds and/or hail, she said. Residents should secure lawn furniture and hanging baskets, etc.

In the event of power outages, Pysz urges residents to contact FirstEnergy 1-888-LIGHTSS.

“If you don’t call, they won’t know power is out in the area,” she said. “If a lot of people call, they will target those locations first.”

Connect-Bridgeport will continue to provide updates and report on storm damage.
