Immediate Area at Slight Risk for Severe Weather Tuesday; Heavy Rain Likely

Today’s heat is expected to meet tomorrow’s cold front, resulting in storms and potentially heavy rain. Though some areas expect severe weather – gusting winds and hail included – the immediate area isn’t at such high risk.

“We are under a slight risk of severe weather Tuesday with a time frame mainly mid- to late-afternoon,” said WDTV Meteorologist Jordan Darensbourg. “We will be keeping an eye on that and alerting the public if that changes.”

The National Weather Service said that slight chance could include damaging wind gusts, hail and even an isolated tornado and could extent into Tuesday night.

Areas to our east and in higher elevations, such as Elkins, Snowshoe and other mountain towns, have an enhanced risk of severe weather Tuesday.

What is more likely Tuesday in the immediate area is rain, heavy at times.
“We may see multiple rounds of heavy rain storms over some areas, so flash flooding is a concern,” Darensbourg said.

After Monday’s temperatures of high-80s into low-90s, heat will combine with a cold front and dry line behind it – the two air masses creating instability and spin that will create potentially severe weather.

Lingering showers may appear Wednesday, but the cold front will have passed through and the instability will have dropped at that point, Darensbourg said.
