Bridgeport is a city which celebrates like no other when victory comes its way. As 2013 drew to a close, football fans braved frigid elements to cheer their Indians on to a Class AA state title. Also during the 2013-14 school year, celebrations took place for the Tribe’s cross-country and track teams. And just yesterday – even the strength of the sun was no match for the shining faces of Bridgeport baseball enthusiasts as the Indians earned yet another state title after a Tribe-style display of skill and stamina at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston.

 

Those are just a few examples. Residents of our city unite to celebrate Christmas tree lighting ceremonies, graduations, municipal parades, poolside community events and much more. Perhaps a little more quietly, they offer congratulatory remarks to kids who ace tests – or report cards, are recognized by their place of employment, earn a scholarship or number of other goal achievements. They support fundraisers for the betterment of their community and its citizens and they welcome new businesses with open arms. This I know. And if you’ve ever been in a basketball gym around here when a young player scored his or her first basket, you know the kind of mass elatement I’m talking about here.

 

And just as they celebrate together, “Bridgeporters” mourn together and carry their fellow residents’ burdens. It’s been a week for the books here in Bridgeport. There have been very high highs and very low lows. We lost a young member of our community, a well-liked BHS grad and athlete who went on to serve his country before meeting his demise at age 21. I've seen the unified power of family and friends and the offering of comforting words, tears, hugs and prayers. I’ve also seen many tears shed by individuals who didn’t personally know Garrett Parker, but who have such great empathy and compassion for “one of their own” and his family – a family which has strapped on the bravery so exemplified by Garrett and who have embraced the peace of God and love of their friends here in  Bridgeport . There have been other deaths this week, too. Just yesterday, I watched the interaction of two families who lost a parent/grandparent. Witnessing their hugs and handshakes wasn’t just a moment in time; it was a symbol of shared years and experiences and that healing truism: “I know what you’re going through.”

 

Also in recent passed days, our city experienced an unprecedented situation as our municipal leader faced charges of federal offense. Regardless of diverse opinions on the matter, there was a fog of solemnness which fell upon Bridgeport. We felt the impact and we understood how each other felt. That’s because we’re a city that sticks together through thick and thin.

 

I’m proud to live here and honored to call Bridgeport my home. I have a feeling many of you echo those remarks.
