John Marshall and Hannah Fetty Named Mr. and Miss BHS 2015

Hannah Fetty is a star member and captain of the Lady Indians basketball team, vice-president of the Bridgeport High School student body and has served in leadership positions of several BHS organizations, including National Honor Society, student council and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is co-editor of the Ki-Cu-Wa and was crowned 2014 Homecoming Queen.

John Marshall plays guitar for the Bridgeport High School Jazz Band and has been featured in several school events, including the BHS Talent Show and homecoming festivities. Among his other interests are videography, which he has put into practice by filming games for the BHS girls’ basketball team. He is also a former member of the BHS Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

“They’re extremely different - yet so much alike,” said BHS Principal Mark DeFazio about this year’s selection as Mr. and Miss BHS.

From a list of all seniors, the BHS faculty narrowed the pool of candidates to four boys and for girls for the annual coveted honor.

“Then the teachers voted again and each picked one boy and one girl,” DeFazio said. “The top vote-getters were named Mr. and Miss BHS.”

One quality the two students share – and one which DeFazio believes garnered the attention of faculty – is their positive, humble attitudes.

“It’s definitely been an honor for me to be around them and be part of their lives for the past four years,” he said. “They both have a lot going for them.”

When asked specifically about Fetty, DeFazio said personality is key.

“I have nothing but admiration and respect for Hannah," he said. "I've watched her walk up and down the hallways and I’ve watched her play on the basketball court for four years. I’ve told her a number of times that I like the way she handles herself. She’s never too high or too low. She just stays in the middle and does everything she needs to do. Everything she does, she does well – and she remains humble. Her personality stands out and she always has a smile on her face.”

Marshall also has notable characteristics, DeFazio said.

“I believe all the teachers know that he’s a very spiritual young man and when you watch him perform, he does such an outstanding job,” he said. “He communicates through his music and he’s a quiet leader. Our teachers admire and respect that in him. He’s one of those kids who comes to school every day, goes to class and there’s never an issue or problem. He knows what he needs to do and does it. He has a very good demeanor and handles himself well. He’s just a fine young man.”

Marshall said he was quite surprised to receive the honor.

“My grades have never been at the top of my class. I just assumed one of the other students would get it,” he said. “The only reason I believe I was picked was because of the way Christ worked through me at Bridgeport High School. So I can't take credit for the victory, it was all Him who sent me.”

While attending BHS, Marshall said classes he excelled in included jazz band, guitar and piano. His music and his relationships with others was his focus during high school.

“Although I did care for my studies, they couldn’t compare to my effort for showing God’s love to the other students and being there for them when they needed someone," he said.

Marshall said the title of Mr. BHS is important to him and he offered a sneak peek of the words he will share with his peers when he addresses them at the BHS commencement ceremony.

“The advice I will leave to the other students is to humbly lose your life so that you may truly see what living is," he said.

Displaying her signature enthusiasm, Fetty said she was also surprised – although very pleasantly – to be named Miss BHS.

"I couldn't be more excited to receive this honor. It's such an absolute blessing from God," she said. "When I first heard about Mr. And Miss BHS, I knew that it was something a student should aspire to be. However, I never dreamed I'd actually be given the opportunity to represent our school as Miss BHS. I'm truly honored and humbled by the fact that the faculty chose me."

She plans to attend either Fairmont State University or Marshall University and study in math and chemistry. Marshall will attend Liberty University and study guitar and worship music.

Runners-up chosen by faculty are Mallory Rinker and Mitchell Winkie, who serve as this year’s senior representatives and will speak at the upcoming senior assembly.

“I think the faculty did a great job in making their picks,” DeFazio said. “They are four great individuals and all have a lot of great qualities.”
