Thursday, Johnson Elementary School held a "Hat Day," inviting students, faculty and staff to wear a  hat to school and make a suggested $1 donation to a fund established to assist Pre-K teacher Nicki Stump, who is battling ovarian cancer. Principal Vicki Huffman said $4,113 was raised through the event.

"We are so blessed to be part of a loving, compassionate and giving community," Huffman said. "Our students and faculty wanted Nicki to know that we support her in every way possible. She has been fighting a long hard battle and we stand with her. The students were amazing (Thursday) as they showed their support!"

Assistant Principal Heather Holbert said the effort was an amazing display of the power of people.

"It was just a simple Hat Day and a suggested $1 donation. In the end, it came out to being a $4,113.00 gift to someone we love! Thank you, Johnson family! Mrs. Stump is blown away and forever grateful for the kindness you have shown," she said. "We are Johnson Proud!"
