Johnson Elementary Social Studies Fair Has Special Judge; Results Listed

By Trina Runner on October 25, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Johnson Elementary held their annual social studies fair. However, students were pleasantly surprised to meet one of their guest judges.

His name is Segan (pronounced SEE-gun) and is a medical service dog. Segan has been trained to alert his handler to possible seizures.  Segan has been in training for more than six months and has been with his handler, Francie Floyd, for more than a year. Segan is a black German Shepherd.

Students were treated to an opportunity to present their social studies projects to Floyd and Segan. Because Segan was such a good judge he received a special treat from the students (a dental chew). Students were also given an opportunity to learn about service dogs, how they are a vital part of our community, and the appropriate way to greet a handler and their service dog when they are out in public.  Students learned the importance of not distracting service dogs as service dogs are always on duty and have a very important job to perform.
