Julia Muller and Broc Oliverio are Bridgeport High School Students of the Month for September 2018.

Muller is the daughter of Jeffrey and Jodi Muller. As a freshman, she was part of the state champion 4X44 and 4X800 relay teams in track. She is also the two-time individual 1600-meter state champion for her sophomore and junior seasons and the 3200-meter state champion her junior season. She holds the BHS track records in the 800, 1600 and part of the 4X800. She has also received All-State honors in cross country as a junior and senior for finishing 7th and 2nd place, respectively, in the state meet, and received BB&T 2017-2018 cross country runner of the year.

Julia served as captain of the cross-country team her senior year when she led the team to a runner-up finish at the state meet. She is also a three-year member of the swim team and runs indoor track in the winter.

She is a member of the National Honor Society and has received an academic letter in 2016 and academic lamp in 2017 and 2018. She is also involved in Young Life and attends Simpson Creek Baptist Church.

Julia has chosen to attend Marshall University in the fall where she plans to major in dietetics and continue running cross-country and track for the Thundering Herd.

Broc Oliverio is the son of Gregg and Janean Oliverio. He was born deaf in both ears and received cochlear implants in his right ear at 14 months old and his left at five years old. Broc has lettered all four years of his high school soccer career while playing travel soccer in the winter and spring with Mountain State Soccer Club since 2011. For the 2018 high school soccer season, Broc has voted as a forward to 1st Team All-County, 1st Team Big 10, 1st Team Region II and All-State Honorable Mention.

Broc is a member of National Honors Society, president of the Ping Pong Club and a member of the Drug-Free Clubs of America. He is also an active member of All Saints Catholic Church, where he serves as Eucharistic Minister and altar server. In the summer of 2018, he attended the Mountaineer Boys State and served as a member of the House of Delegates. In his free time, he enjoys boating in the summer, golfing, playing billiards and ping pong, going to the gym, reading, volunteering, horseback riding on the family farm and watching or playing other sports with his friends. He is also employed at Twin Oaks Restaurant.

He plans to attend Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY. Here, he is eligible to get a scholarship for those that are deaf and hard of hearing through federal grants. He also will be able to interact with both a hearing and deaf culture and get best of both worlds. Although taking an undeclared pathway in engineering, his goal is to earn a master’s degree in the area he chooses.

BHS Principal Matt DeMotto said Students of the Month are selected by the BHS staff. Members are asked to consider character, respect, behavior, academics, effort, attendance, extra-curriculars, leadership and trustworthiness when selecting students. It is an honor and a challenge, DeMotto said, because there are so many deserving BHS students.
