As the process involving the implementation of a sales tax increase of up to 1 percent moves forward, many have asked members of Bridgeport City Council what items are exempt from taxation and what are not. Council member Harry M. "Hank" Murray told his colleagues during Monday's work session that it was one of the most frequent questions he's been asked and believes there is some confusion.

With that in mind, Bridgeport City Clerk Andrea Kerr provided a list of those items that are exempt from the proposed tax if it is approved on second reading of the ordinance Dec. 14. It would then be submitted to the West Virginia State Tax Department and the earliest it could go into place is July 1, 2016.

The exemptions, Kerr said, mirror those at the state level. Click HERE to read to read the state list of exemptions.
