Locals Say Saturday's "Color Me Rad" 5K Was a Blast

Saturday’s 5K at Morgantown’s Mylan Park was a blast – in more ways than one.

During the walk/run course, participants of “Color Me Rad” were blasted with color cannons, color bombs and other creative explosions – turning those once white Ts and sneakers into a myriad of tie-dye tones.

The event Web site encourages registration just for the fun of it and a number of locals obliged.

“It was tons of fun – something everyone can do since you don’t have to run,” said Loretta Greathouse. “Going with a group was a blast. It kept you motivated and pushing each other.”

Greathouse and her friend Sarah Hurst participated in the event last minute, but next time, they will plan ahead – and take the kids, too.

“There were lots of little kids also, some in strollers,” Greathouse said.

Bridgeport schools were well represented, too.

Representing Bridgeport Middle School were teacher, Twila Miller and Principal Carole Crawford and from Simpson Elementary, was Olivia Crawford. Carole Crawford described the event as wet, muddy and fun. She said she thoroughly enjoyed her very first color run and was able to check an item off her bucket list.

Christa Randolph of Bridgeport Physical Therapy was among the spirited sprinters.

“A group of girls did the race last year and it was a ton of fun,” she said.

Randolph said she was drawn to the event by the great energy and atmosphere and because all levels of runners were included. She also liked the fact that the event benefits charity. In this case, a small portion of the $50 registration fee benefited the Rosenbaum Family House, which provides housing for adult patients of WVU hospitals and their family members.

The weather conditions could have been better.

“Unfortunately, it was pouring down rain and cold,” Randolph said, “but we still had a great time full of memories – and color!”

Whether those colors stain or not is yet to be seen, but the hues are non-toxic and chemical free. In fact, the color bursts are made of cornstarch.

Bridgeport’s Ella and Maya Flowers also participated in the color run, for the second year in a row. Also on board was Victoria Harbert.
