Meadowbrook Mall to Host Senior Health & Fitness Day

By Julie Perine on May 22, 2015 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Meadowbrook Mall hosts annual events for babies, moms and brides-to-be – all which are very well attended.

For the first time, senior citizens will be the focus of the mall’s vendor-style fair. The theme is fitness and wellness. Joining Meadowbrook Mall in the May 27 event are the Harrison County YMCA and Mountain State Medical Specialties. Those organizations join about 1,000 others across the nation in celebrating the 22nd Annual National Senior Health & Fitness Day.

A host of wellness information will be offered. Games will be played and prizes awarded. Seniors can also take advantage of free health and vision screenings and low-cost blood testing. They can sample fitness classes including Zumba Gold, Silver Sneakers and even Tai Chi.

Though the focus is on seniors, anyone is welcome to come browse vendors and take part in screenings. It’s all in an effort to promote active, healthy lifestyles through physical fitness, good nutrition and preventive care.

“Our Senior Health & Fitness Day is a wonderful opportunity for seniors to make, renew, and revitalize their commitment to live healthier lives through better health and fitness,” said Meadowbrook Mall Marketing Director, Robin Urquhart,

Like many of the mall’s other successful lifestyle events, it is hoped that Senior Health & Fitness Day will become an annual event.

“I came from the Morgantown area where these type of events are so appreciated and well attended,” Urquhart said. “Hopefully Mountain State will stick with us through the ‘growing" stage.’”

Meadowbrook Mall serves individuals from several surrounding counties so it is expected that residents of extended areas will take advantage of the event, she said.

Urquhart described some of the vendor offerings and other activities available:

“Mountain State Medical Specialties, Inc. will offer low cost multiphasic blood testing, as well as free skin cancer, pulmonary and blood pressure screenings,” she said. “The Bridgeport Lion’s Club will offer free vision screenings. Tai Chi, Silver Sneakers and Zumba Gold classes will take place throughout the day and at noon seniors can enjoy bingo in the Mall Food Court. “

She encourages medical providers interested in taking part in future events to contact Meadowbrook Mall. For more information including times for fitness classes, visit www.meadowbrookmall.com.

The May 27 activities will take place 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the WDTV5 Event Center at Meadowbrook Mall.

National Senior Health & Fitness Day is always held on the last Wednesday in May in support of Older Americans Month and National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. The program, the largest of its kind, is organized by the Mature Market Resource Center, a national clearinghouse for professionals who work with older adults.
