With the municipal election on June 13 rapidly approaching, Bridgeport citizens will once again have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the names on the ballot.

For the seventh consecutive election (dating back to 2011) the GFWC Woman’s Club of Bridgeport will be sponsoring a Meet the Candidates event.

This year’s event will take place on Tuesday, June 6 (one full week before the election) at the Benedum Civic Center.

“The community gets to come out and submit their own questions,” said Ruth Allen, a former City Council member and current member of the GFCW Woman’s Club. “They can direct their question to one candidate or to all of them.

“I’m amazed and delighted at the depth of the questions are audience asks.”

Allen said they hand out index cards and writing utensils to audience members to write down their questions. After those are read, there will be time allotted for audience members to ask questions.

“I think the candidates look forward to this too because it gives them the opportunity to answer the questions that people really want to know,” Allen said. “It sure beats trying to go around and knock on doors.”

Each candidate is given two minutes to introduce themselves at the start of the event.

Current City Recorder Dr. Harry M. “Hank” Murray will run unopposed in the upcoming election.

There are five candidates running for two City Council seats. They are incumbent Don Burton, Barry Balon, Brian Kemmerer, Clayton Rice and John Walker, Jr.

The event will start at 7 p.m.
