More Snow on the Way: Immediate Area Under Winter Weather Advisory as Jonas Still Fresh in Minds

By Julie Perine on February 08, 2016 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Although nothing near the severity of Winter Storm Jonas, the immediate area is expecting enough snow to possibly shake things up a little.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a winter weather advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. today to 7 a.m. Wednesday. Accumulations of two to six inches are expected over a 36-hour time period with some settling and melting of fallen snow expecting to occur afterwards.

“We are expecting heavy bands of snow coming through periodically that will impair visibility while driving and cause hazardous conditions,” said Laura Pysz, director of Bridgeport Emergency Services. “So there will be travel difficulties, including snow covered roads.”

The advantage to the upcoming band of snow verses Winter Storm Jonas - which a few weeks ago dumped about two feet of snow on Bridgeport and much of the region - is that anticipated snowfall is expected to arrive over a 36-hour period.

“That’s better than being crammed into 24 hours or less, so that will help tremendously, plus we’re not expecting as much snow,” Pysz said.

As of now, the National Weather Service out of Charleston is calling for three to six inches for our immediate area, however since we are so close to Marion County – for which the National Weather Service out of Pittsburgh is predicting more – we could see slightly more than expected.

For the short term, a rain/snow mix is expected to turn to snow between 9 p.m. today and midnight.

Pysz said because residents heeded warnings with regard to Jonas – staying off roads whenever possible and traveling slowly and with caution when they did have to drive – there were very few accidents and related incidents.

As always, Pysz urges residents to take precautions while shoveling snow.

“Cold weather, in general, is hard on the heart. Combine that with the exertion of shoveling snow and it can be dangerous,” she said.

She urges residents to take their time, take frequent breaks and remove snow in layers versus moving heavy shovels of snow. (See specific tips on safe shoveling on this page.)

Pysz also asks residents to continue to check on their neighbors during snowstorms, especially those who are elderly and homebound.

“We just can’t stress that enough,” she said.

In addition to portions of Ohio and Kentucky, the winter weather advisory is in effect for Harrison, Lewis, Taylor, Gilmer, Braxton, Wayne, Cabell, Mason, Jackson, Wood, Pleasants, Tyler, Lincoln, Putnam, Kanawha, Roane, Wirt, Calhoun, Ritchie, Doddridge, Mingo, Logan, Bonne, Clay, McDowell, Wyoming, Raleigh, Fayette, Nicholas, Webster, Upshur and Barbour Counties.

According to WDTV, today’s temperatures will stay right around 30 degrees with Tuesday’s temperatures dropping to the high 20s and reaching 45 degrees during the day. As Wednesday approaches, lows will dip into the single digits and only rise into the 20s. Several rounds of snow showers are possible through Thursday with more accumulation expected for mountainous areas. Stay up to date with WDTV’s weather forecast HERE
