Mountaineer Greats to Take Part in Third WVU Men's Basketball Alumni Game

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on July 24, 2017 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Many of West Virginia basketball’s great players from the last decade will be back to play in the Mountain State later this month.

These Mountaineer greats will take part in the third West Virginia University Men’s Basketball Alumni Game at 7 p.m. on July 29 at Fairmont State University’s Joe Retton Arena. Tickets start at $15 and can be purchased online at jflowent.com or $20 at the door on the night of the game.
"The best part about the game is being able to play in front of the wonderful fans and people of this great state," Flowers said. "I hope we can flood Joe Retton Arena with gold and blue."

This year’s roster will be highlighted by Da’Sean Butler and Kevin Jones, WVU’s third and fifth all-time leading scorers. They'll also be teamed up - and playing against - Mountaineer favorites from across the decades.

In fact, this year’s game will include four starters from the 2010 Final Four and Big East Conference Tournament Championship teams; Butler and Jones will be back on the court with the likes of Truck Bryant, Joe Mazzulla, John Flowers, Devin Ebanks and Casey Mitchell from one of the program’s best-ever teams.

Even some Mountaineers fresh from a Sweet 16 finish earlier this year will participate including James Long, Elijah Macon and Teyvon Myers.

A portion of the proceeds from this year’s game will benefit the WVU Medicine Children’s Cure Kids Cancer Fund. Since the Alumni Game’s creation in 2015, it has raised more than $14,000 for different local charities.

This year, the game moved from Morgantown to Fairmont so those unable to make it in the past may have a better chance to see their favorite past players once again. It’ll be especially memorable for former Mountaineer Joe Mazzulla, the head coach of the Fairmont State men’s basketball program.

"It feels good to be able to play with my brothers again who we achieved so much with," Mazzulla said.

In addition to the action on the court, there will be giveaways, auctions and more. Players will be available after the conclusion of the game to sign autographs and take photos with fans.
For fans who want to get closer to the players, Flowers will also be hosting a special evening with players the night before at Kegler’s Sports Bar and Lounge. Player selection and team assignment will be made in-person at the event. Tickets are $10 and are available at jflowent.com.
